Located on the corner of Smith and Ritchie Streets, Waratah, the Waratah Community Hub is a much‑loved local building with deep roots in the town’s history and an important new role in its future. Owned by the Waratah–Wynyard Council, the building was formerly the school headmaster’s house and remains a familiar and welcoming presence within the community.
The Hub is being revitalised as a shared social space and will become the home of Waratah’s new Chatty Cafe, proudly aligned with the Chatty Cafe Australia movement. Chatty Cafes are designed to help address loneliness and social isolation by creating welcoming places where conversation is encouraged, everyone is welcome, and no one feels rushed or out of place.
The Waratah Chatty Cafe will provide a relaxed, friendly environment where people of all ages and backgrounds can sit, chat and connect, whether they arrive alone or with others. Over a cup of tea or coffee and a light snack, visitors will be invited to enjoy meaningful conversations, build new friendships, and feel a sense of belonging within their community.
By blending the warmth of a traditional community gathering place with the values of the Chatty Cafe initiative—connection, kindness, inclusion and community wellbeing—the Waratah Community Hub will be a safe and welcoming space where conversations happen naturally, and everyone has a seat at the table.
Through the renewal of this historic building, the Waratah Community Hub honours the town’s past while nurturing its social future, strengthening community ties and supporting positive mental and social wellbeing for Waratah residents and visitors alike.
