The role of a Chatty Volunteer is to help start conversations at designated ‘Have a Chat’ table in venues that are part of the scheme.

The requirement would be to commit between 1-2 hours each week to sit at the table. You would be asked to wear a ‘Have a Chat’ name tag so customers can clearly identify the table and come and have a chat, should they wish to.

This would be perfect for someone looking for a relaxed volunteering role. No skills required, just the ability to enjoy having a chat and being both a good chatterer and a good listener! We would endeavour to match each volunteer with their closest venue, to minimise the amount of travel required. We will provide the information/training you need to be sure you are comfortable in the role.

Additionally, Chatty Cafe Australia also offers volunteering roles which include running online chat meetings (e.g. Zoom, Facetime, Messenger), for people who would like to have a chat or making one to one phone calls in emergencies. These roles would be great for anyone who prefers to volunteer from home. There are also roles for administrative support for your Chatty Regional Manager in different States and Territories or social media such as taking photos of events in local areas and posting them online for us ie Facebook and Instragram.

If any of these volunteer opportunities might be of interest to you, please please use the form below to register your interest.

Volunteer FAQs

If your question is not answered here just contact us and we’ll be more than happy to provide some personal help.

Chatting is such a simple concept but so important for mental and physical health. Loneliness can seriously impact a person’s sense of wellbeing and cause a range of disorders including anxiety and depression.

Most of our volunteers help facilitate conversations at designated Chatty Tables and act as “ice-breakers” to introduce the Chatty concept in your local area.

We also offer volunteering roles which include making one to one phone calls and running online Chatty Café sessions, for people who may be isolated. These roles would be great for anyone who prefers to volunteer from home.

Other volunteer opportunities are also available for tasks relating to administration, strategy, governance, promotions and donations.

Whilst a Chatty venue is most likely to be a café or restaurant local to you, it could also be a local club, pub, community centre, aged-care residential facility, hospital cafeteria, school, library, shopping centre or neighbourhood house.

We’ve got a simple online registration process . Once registered we will organise an induction for you, a handbook and other materials to support you in your role as a Chatty Café volunteer. A Working With Children Check is required and is free in most States/Territories for volunteers.
